Disease containment plans seem to be making a difference.
Even as coronavirus cases continue to surge, the influenza numbers generally seen at this time of year have taken a remarkable dip, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. Cases of influenza reached record lows last week, with fewer than 40 diagnoses recorded during December 13-19.
This apparent good news marks a steep decrease from last year’s total of 7,703 cases during the same timeframe. The positivity rate has declined sharply during this calendar year, as only 0.10 percent of tests taken this year came back positive. The average over the past five years is 80 percent positive.
CDC officials remain concerned about the possibility of having a surge of flu at the same time as there is a surge in COVID-19. Many point to steps taken to contain the coronavirus as having an effect on influenza.
